Pre-launch influencer outreach template for indie founders
A copy-pasteable outreach template built for indie founders with zero PR background, plus the exact CAN-SPAM rules and platform DM guardrails that keep your accounts standing. Send it today.

You do not need a PR background, an agency, or an existing relationship to send outreach that gets replies. You need a short, specific email, the four compliance rules that keep it legal, and a list of contacts who actually cover your niche. This post gives you all three, in that order.
The template (copy and fill in the brackets)
Keep this under 100 words. That is not a style preference. Short emails from unknown senders signal confidence. Long ones signal desperation.
Subject: Quick question about [specific episode / post / issue number]
Hi [First name],
I read your [recent piece on X topic] and it stuck with me. You nailed [one specific detail — name the episode, the argument, the timestamp].
I am building [one-sentence product description] for [exact audience]. It solves [the specific problem that audience already talks about].
Would a short mention in [their newsletter / next video / upcoming episode] make sense? Or is there a better way to get in front of your audience?
Happy to send a free account either way.
[Your name] [Your product URL] Unsubscribe: [working opt-out link]
That opt-out line at the bottom is not courtesy. It is a legal requirement. The section below explains why removing it is a $53,088-per-email mistake.
Why each part of the template does work
Four structural choices separate this from the cold pitches that go straight to deleted.
The subject line references their content, not your product. "Quick question about episode 47" gets opened. "Collaboration opportunity" does not. One specific reference signals that you did the homework, and most founders never do.
The first sentence is about them, specifically. Not "I love your newsletter." Name the issue number, the argument they made, the guest they had on. One real detail does more than three generic sentences of flattery.
The product description is exactly one sentence. Write it before you draft the email. If you cannot describe what you build and who it helps in one sentence, the recipient cannot, and they will not try.
The ask is the smallest ask possible. "Would a mention make sense?" is a yes or no. "Would you consider a dedicated sponsored feature?" requires a budget conversation nobody is ready for on first contact. Start small. Bigger conversations come after the first reply.
Adapting the template by contact type
The core structure stays fixed. Only the reference field and the ask change.
| Contact type | Specific reference | Ask |
|---|---|---|
| Newsletter writer | Issue number + one point they made | Mention in a future issue |
| Podcaster | Episode title + one insight or guest moment | Guest slot or intro mention |
| YouTuber | Video title + a specific timestamp observation | Short mention or pinned comment |
| Blogger or indie media | Post title + the angle they took | Roundup inclusion or dedicated post |
Write one base pitch per campaign. Swap the reference field for each contact. That is the only manual work in the whole sequence.
CAN-SPAM compliance: the four rules you must follow
This is the section most indie founders skip. It is also the one that gets them banned or fined.
Under CAN-SPAM, every commercial email you send to a US recipient must include:
- An accurate "From" name and address. No fake sender names, no spoofed domains.
- A non-deceptive subject line. No "Re: our call" if there was no call.
- A working opt-out mechanism that processes within 10 business days.
- Your physical mailing address or a registered postal address in the body.
The template above covers all four. Do not remove the opt-out line. The penalty for a missing opt-out reaches up to $53,088 per violating email, and joint liability applies: if you use a platform to send, both you and the platform are exposed.
One thing CAN-SPAM does not require: prior consent before emailing a public business contact. You can cold-email a creator's public business address, provided you follow the four rules. That is why email is the right first-contact channel.
"Every email leaves with an opt-out. Compliance is not optional here."
Platform DMs: warm follow-up only, never bulk cold contact
Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube all prohibit bulk unsolicited automated DMs. Account suspension is an active enforcement risk on all four platforms. Not a theoretical one.
The correct sequence:
- Email first, compliant, with an opt-out.
- Engage with their content genuinely for a few days.
- DM only after an email reply opens the conversation, or as a warm follow-up to a live thread.
Email is the compliant cold-contact channel. Social DMs are the warm-follow-up channel. Keep them in that order and your accounts stay standing.
If you want more on finding the right contacts before you send anything, how to find influencers for your product launch covers the search process from scratch.
The follow-up (exactly once)
Wait five to seven days. Send one follow-up. Three sentences maximum.
Include one new piece of information: a waitlist number, a beta result, one concrete data point. Then a single soft question: "Still worth a mention, or not a fit right now?"
After that, move on. A second follow-up crosses into pressure. Pressure gets you mentally added to a spam list even when you never hit a technical filter. One follow-up respects the inbox.
Building the list this template goes to
The template only works if the list is right. A podcaster with 1,500 listeners who are all indie SaaS founders will drive more waitlist signups than a general tech newsletter with 60,000 readers who mostly buy enterprise software.
Filter contacts in this order:
- Audience fit. Does their audience match who you are building for?
- Category coverage. Do they already cover problems adjacent to yours?
- Reach. Then look at follower or subscriber counts.
Finding 20 to 30 contacts who pass all three filters manually takes days of search work. Days you probably do not have while you are still shipping.

Frequently asked questions
Can I send this template cold, without any prior relationship? Yes, to a public business address. CAN-SPAM does not require prior consent for cold commercial email to US recipients, as long as you include accurate sender info, a non-deceptive subject, a working opt-out, and a mailing address. That is all four rules the template already covers.
How many contacts should I send this to at once? Start with 10 to 20 highly filtered contacts, not 200 generic ones. A small, well-targeted list gets a higher reply rate and keeps your domain reputation clean. Scale after you see what angle gets replies.
What if someone does not reply to the follow-up? Move on. One email and one follow-up is the limit. After that, you are either not a fit or not a priority right now. Both are fine. A clean list of non-replies tells you something about your targeting, not about your product.
Do I need a paid tool to run this outreach? Not to send. You need a list of contacts, a personal email account, and this template. The hard part is finding contacts who are actually a fit for your niche. That is where LaunchNowAI's free sample saves you the search time. No credit card, 5 contacts back in minutes.
